Gold-bearing ore was discovered in 1895 at Muirs Reef, about 8 miles south of Te Puke, and mining followed intermittently for more than 30 years. Owing to various setbacks, good results were obtained only during 1919 and 1923, and in 1928 all underground operations ceased. The town grew as a result of the development of farming.

Adams, the well-known mining engineer of the Haurakl Goldfields, has been paying a visit to the Te Pake (Joldßeefs property, which is now being developed by Mr Geo. J. Muir. It is on private property, in fact still the Muir family, who were one of the gold miners over one hundred years ago. While officially it goes by this goldfield name, it is rather an overstatement.
